Anthracite is just bituminous coal that was subjected to heat and pressure in the peat bog where it was formed. Now if you can find a place that sells anthracite coal it still has slag but I found it to be cleaner until the feed shop I go to went to the cheaper stuff. You have to clean them out otherwise they start getting on the metal and it gets messy. If you get bituminous coal (green coal) you get a lot of slag, which are little balls of glassy stuff that ball up in the fire. Anyways that's how Coal and Coke work out I think, I could be wrong in there somewhere. I read a few web pages that said that coke is more easily available in Europe, but again I do not know if that is true or not. I pay about 25 dollars for a 50 pound bag. I live in California and the feed shop I go to sells coal, so I buy that. The big thing with buying coal or coke is availability. It also burns hot enough that it ignites and helps burn off the nasty smoke the coal gives off. I should also mention that once your fire is burning coke, it burns clean and sends off this pretty blue flame. So if you buy coal you are also buying coke. You just keep piling on more coal on top of the fire and the center of the fire where you are putting you metal to heat it up is coke. When you first light coal it burns this nasty thick smoke for a little bit but after a few minutes the "impurities" burn off and you are left with coke in your fire. When I was making my forge I did a lot of research into this and this is what I came up with.
